The headline: Shanghai founds a bloc
The World AI Conference wrapped in Shanghai with Xi Jinping's first-ever WAIC keynote and the launch of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization — 29 founding countries. Same week, the EU ordered Google to open Android to rival AI assistants. Whatever your politics, the architecture read is the same: interoperability is being legislated because nobody shipped it voluntarily. We had this exact argument about MCP — the USB-C lesson applies to geopolitics too.
The cost of a moonshot, invoiced
Oracle cut 30,000 jobs to fund its Stargate build-out. That's not a restructuring, that's a re-platforming of a company around one bet. I've carried P&L for exactly one restaurant and I still felt that number in my chest. When the bet is that big, adoption isn't optional — somebody should ask the remaining employees how the change management is going.

- Google shipped three Geminis on July 22: 3.6 Flash (cheaper, 17% more token-efficient, Computer Use built in), 3.5 Flash-Lite (cheaper still), and a restricted Flash Cyber. Plus Gemini Robotics ER 2 for embodied reasoning. The tooling changed again; the architecture still didn't.

- South Korea announced a free national AI chatbot on domestic tech, to reduce reliance on ChatGPT and Claude. Sovereign AI has a consumer product now.
